ThunderLip

ThunderLip

Thunderlip began in 2003. They started off playing shows locally in 2004, and quickly got picked up by Lucid Records ( now defunct ) and put out their "S/T" release in June 2005. They toured heavily on this release and the record peaked to No. 90 on the CMJ charts. Through extensive tours they landed clothing and shoe endorsements from Matix Clothing and DVS Shoes. They were also endorsed by Vestal Watch and Electric Visual. They played many surf expos, and in late 2005 they were voted best metal band by Fuel TV. They continued touring on the S/T release throughout most of 2006, and in early 2007 they tracked their second release "The Prophecy". This was also released by Lucid Records. They did several tours for this record, including the Props Visual Road Fools BMX tour (which included such riders as Mat Hoffman, Mike Aitken, and Chase Hawk). The tour also included Lucero, and was sponsored by Levi's. The band slowed down in early 2009 and later that year founding member/guitarist James Yopp joined another North Carolina based band Valient Thorr, eventually leading to a long-term hiatus for Thunderlip. The hiatus ended in late 2012 when The band re-grouped to began working on new material. As of December 2013 original members Chuck Krueger, Johnny Collins and James Yopp have recorded a full albums worth of new material with choice Wilmington musicians. They are planning for a 2014 release.

Solar Halos

Solar Halos

With a magnetic sound as imposing and radiant as their celestial namesake, SOLAR HALOS provide a kaleidoscope of textures and enterprise which boldly ignites the imagination. The trio from Chapel Hill, North Carolina is a band crafting mesmeric brews of stoner and psychedelic rock, sonic weaves to which acclaim has not been reserved in its receipt.

Solar Halos is the portrait of the united invention of former Horseback and Curtains of Night guitarist/vocalist NORA ROGERS, Fin Fang Foom bassist EDDIE SANCHEZ, and drummer JOHN CROUCH of Horseback and Caltrop. Together the three draw on previous experiences to cast new evocative explorations; sonic quests upon a stoner seeded canvas coloured with a uniquely eloquent yet rousing psychedelic paint box. The constant emotive incitement of their sound equally embraces doomy shadows unveiled through a hypnotic drone bred quality though it is just one layer in the sonic evocation, a texture broken up through the ethereal voice of Rogers, contrasted provocatively by darker male tones, and persistently stirring guitar melodies which ignite the darker scenery.

Salvación

Salvacion

Salvación began as the brainchild of drummer Carlos Denogean. Eager not only to pay tribute to classic Heavy Metal but to play a part in keeping the tradition alive and vital as well. The band formed in 2009 when childhood friend and guitarist Nicholas Sponsel moved to Wilmington North Carolina with the same ambitions. Enlisting the help of some of the most talented musicians in the area they set out to have their vision realized. Despite lineup changes the core of the group remained and in less than three years self-released two full length albums and played numerous shows with some of the best internationally known Heavy Metal bands. In 2013 they set out on their most ambitious project yet, a concept record inspired by Hernán Cortés and the conquest of Mexico. Identifying with the historical figure’s unwavering conviction for his goal the record is a monument to the band’s steadfast resolution for Heavy Metal. The year 2013 also marked the return of Lead guitarist Dan Todd who contributed immensely on the band’s well received second album Way More Unstoppable. The alchemy of this lineup is the strongest it has ever been and they are determined now more than ever to keep defending the faith of True Heavy Metal.

About

KrakenFest

KrakenFest is a heavy music festival and cookout held twice a year in the Spring and Fall at the Kraken Bar in Chapel Hill, NC. The music styles represented are from all over the metal and hard rock spectrum. Ticket prices include dinner and each show has a different theme to the cookout. So far we've roasted a whole pig, had an oyster roast, and have a goat roast planned for KrakenFest 3. We always have vegan options for the non-carnivores.

Back in the Winter of 2011 I stopped in for a beer at the Kraken bar in Chapel Hill, NC and was immediately charmed by the place. I casually mentioned to the bartender that I would love for Colossus (my band) to play the Kraken. He passed me on to Eric Pais, the bar's owner, and the idea snowballed from there. What if we had a cookout? What if we had several bands? What if we made it into a festival? I got more and more excited about it and KrakenFest was born. We have it twice a year- spring and fall. It celebrates that exciting time in North Carolina when the weather changes and everyone is ready to get outside and party. The idea is simple: a show that is ideal for both the fans and the bands. Everyone gets fed for cheap, the food is awesome, and the crowd is pumped from the get go- everyone wins.
